Pallet Rack Decking is typically made out of wire mesh material, which is fine for many applications, but does come with some drawbacks. For starters, pallet rack wire decking is not strong enough to work as shelving material for heavier loads. And, while using wire grid as shelving does make shelves light weight and easy to install, it unfortunately also allows for debris to fall through the shelf – which could pose a safety risk.
Case Study: Alternative Pallet Rack Shelving
A long-time customer of ours, who specializes in safety railing products and has a large warehouse facility in our local area, came to us with a problem that required our expertise to solve. They needed a cost effective solution for custom heavy-duty pallet rack decking manufactured out of solid steel.
Their facility was already outfitted with a high volume of standard pallet rack shelving that utilized wire decking. Unfortunately, using wire decking for pallet racks would not provide them with anywhere near enough loading capacity for what they were storing on their pallet shelving racks.
Not only that, but they also required a solution that would do a much better containing wooden pallet debris and pallet contents. They were worried about accidents causing by falling debris of overhead shelving.
Solid Steel Industrial Pallet Rack Shelving
After heading to the drawing board and working up some calculations based on how our customer would be utilizing the pallet shelving racks, we determined that the majority of their materials could be held by 12 gauge carbon steel reinforced with three stiffeners.
Several racks, that needed to hold even greater loads, had to be manufactured from 10 gauge carbon steel and reinforced with five stiffeners. By listening to our customer’s concerns and factoring in all of the information they provided to us, we were able to manufacture a cost effective custom solution that readily solved their two main concerns:
- Increased Shelving Load Capacity
- Increased Safety through Spill Containment
Heavy-Duty Industrial Steel Shelving to Order
Another concern our customer made us aware of had to do with delivery. All told, we provided our customer with Three Hundred 12 gauge solid steel pallet rack shelves and Eighteen 10 gauge shelves, but we did this over the course of about three to four months. Our customer did not want to take delivery of all of their steel pallet rack decking at once because they needed time to empty their racks of existing material first.
By splitting their total order into ten separate releases, we were able to accommodate their desire to phase the new pallet rack shelving into their warehouse in small installments, lessening the burden to their warehouse staff and ultimately making the process run more smoothly.

Furthermore, they no longer had to worry about pallet debris from the lifting, moving, and storing process falling through the shelving and landing on top of other materials being stored – or worse, raining down on workers and causing injury.
Because the pallet racking shelves were now constructed from solid steel instead of wire grid, pallet debris was contained on the pallet shelf, minimizing contamination of other goods being stored beneath and maximizing safety to workers.
